Events Co-ordinator

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Events Co-ordinator who is able to plan, develop and implement a vibrant and viable programme of events both within Discover and externally. They will work closely with our Director of Events and Marketing to ensure the events programme delivers high quality artistic experiences for families and supports our artistic ambitions.

The post holder will support the development of the programme through building relationships with publishers, authors/illustrators and cultural organisations, bringing a greater understanding of the wide range of different arts practices to the organisation.

Festival Assistant (Freelance)

Discover has been commissioned by Newham Council’s Community Neighbourhood team to run and programme the Newham Word Festival. The festival will run from 6 -19 November 2017, and will include storytelling, author events, debates, visual arts, performance, screenings, poetry and brand new pieces of work taking place in libraries, community centres, schools and other venues across the borough.

Discover is offering the chance for an individual to join the festival team as Festival Assistant. This is a hands-on role for someone who is looking to gain experience working on a festival. The chosen candidate will demonstrate a desire to work within the arts, ideally within a festival or producing/marketing/production/events context.


The role will consist of three days work per week from 4 September – 15 October and five days per week from 16 October – 24 November (including weekends during the festival). The Festival Assistant will be based at Discover and will be pay a fixed-rate fee on a freelance basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for any taxes and expenses associated with the role.

The exhibition will run for 1 year and be visited by up to 100,000 people.

Set Builder Job Description

Creative Volunteers

We are currently looking to put together a volunteer crew to help us to create our fantastic new exhibition: A World inside a Book – Gruffalos, Dragons and other Creatures.

We will be creating an immersive play environment for our visitors at Discover. We require assistance with the exhibition set build, which includes scenic painting, construction, prop making, set dressing and costume making. We are seeking volunteers with solid experience in these areas.

The exhibition will run for one year and be visited by approximately 100,000 people. This provides a brilliant opportunity for those wishing to gain further experience and make contacts within the community arts and theatre industries.

Ideally, applicants need to be available for at least 5 consecutive working days between Monday 4 September and Saturday 21 October.

London travel expenses will be reimbursed and a £3 lunch voucher will be provided daily.

Exhibition Production/Installation Manager

We are looking to hire a freelance Production/Installation Manager to manage the pre-production and installation of our latest exhibition A World inside a Book: Gruffalos, Dragons and other Creatures, which will be based on the hugely popular range of picture books by Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson.

We are looking for someone with strong all round exhibition installation and fit out experience, including construction management, lighting and AV work with a background in installing exhibitions in non-traditional or installation spaces.

Key Days:

You will need to be available for:

  • An agreed amount of pre-production days between now and the delivery of the exhibition.
  • The entire get in of the exhibition (Early September – Early October)

Project fee to be negotiated on agreed time commitments and experience.

Visitor Services Assistants

The Visitor Services Assistant (VSA) will provide an engaged, friendly and helpful first point of contact for the general public. The Assistant will welcome schools, families, community groups and any other visitors to enhance their visitor experience.

The role includes working on the Reception desk, in the Retail shop and café, hosting events and assisting the Operations Team. Discover also runs events and projects which take place at different venues around London.

Salary: £9.34 p/hour
